The short answer: a small church can live stream a Sunday service well with one decent camera (even a recent phone on a tripod), a direct audio feed from the sound desk, a laptop running free software such as OBS Studio, a wired internet connection, and a streaming licence that covers the songs you sing. The camera matters less than most people think. Clear sound, a steady picture and a stream that starts on time are what keep people watching.

This guide walks through the setup in the order a volunteer team usually needs it: what to decide first, what to buy (and what to skip), how to wire the sound, which settings to use on YouTube, the licensing question most churches miss, and a simple Sunday checklist. If you are looking for services to watch rather than run, see our list of church live streams to join online.

Step 1: Decide what the stream is for

Before anyone buys a cable, agree on three things as a leadership team:

Who it is for. Housebound members, people travelling, families with a sick child and first-time visitors "checking you out" all need different things. Members want the whole service; visitors often watch only the sermon later.

What you will stream. Many churches stream worship and the sermon but switch to a holding slide during prayer ministry, baptisms of minors or pastoral announcements.

Where it will live. One main platform is enough to start. YouTube is the easiest to find and to embed on a church website; Facebook works well if your congregation already lives there. You can add a second platform later.

Write the answers down. They decide camera angles, privacy rules and how much volunteer time you need.

Step 2: The minimum kit that actually works

Camera

A phone from the last few years on a sturdy tripod, placed at the back or side of the room at roughly head height, gives a perfectly watchable picture. If you have budget later, a camcorder or a mirrorless camera with clean HDMI output and a capture device gives better zoom and low-light performance. Lock the framing on the pulpit and the worship area; constant panning makes online viewers dizzy.

Audio (the part that matters most)

Viewers will forgive a soft picture. They will not stay for a sermon that echoes or a band that distorts. Do not rely on the camera's built-in microphone at the back of the room. Instead, take a feed from the sound desk:

Use an aux or matrix output on the mixer and connect it to a USB audio interface on the streaming laptop.

Build a separate stream mix if your desk allows it. The mix that sounds right in the room is usually too quiet on vocals and too heavy on drums for headphones.

Add one or two room microphones, set low, so online viewers hear the congregation singing. Without them the stream feels like a studio recording, not a gathered church.

Computer and software

A mid-range laptop can run OBS Studio, which is free and open source and available for Windows, macOS and Linux. OBS lets you combine the camera, the audio feed, song lyrics and sermon slides into "scenes" you switch between with one click: a welcome slide, a worship scene with lyrics, a sermon scene, a giving or contact slide, and an end card.

Internet

Use a wired Ethernet connection wherever you can. Church Wi-Fi shared with the whole congregation is the most common reason streams freeze. Run an upload speed test during a real Sunday, not on a quiet Tuesday, because phones in the room compete for the same connection.

Step 3: Set up YouTube properly (do this a week early)

According to YouTube's help centre, a channel needs to be verified and free of live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days before it can go live, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Streaming from a phone app has extra rules: YouTube currently requires at least 50 subscribers for mobile live streaming, may limit the audience until a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, and notes that the first live stream can take up to 24 hours to be enabled. Streaming through an encoder like OBS avoids the mobile subscriber requirement, which is one reason most churches use a laptop.

For bitrate, YouTube's encoder settings guide lists, for H.264 video, a minimum of 3 Mbps and a recommended 8 Mbps at 720p 30fps, and a minimum of 5 Mbps and a recommended 14 Mbps at 1080p 30fps. A practical rule many church tech teams follow: if your measured Sunday-morning upload speed is not comfortably above the recommended figure, stream at 720p. A smooth 720p stream is far better than a 1080p stream that keeps buffering.

Other settings worth doing once:

Schedule the stream in YouTube Studio a few days ahead, with a clear title (for example "Sunday Service – 10:00 am" with the date) and a thumbnail. A scheduled stream gives you a link to share in the church newsletter and WhatsApp group.

Use a persistent stream key so the OBS settings do not change every week.

Decide on chat. Live chat is a gift for housebound members, but it needs a volunteer moderator who welcomes people and offers prayer.

Step 4: Sort out music licensing before your first stream

This is where well-meaning churches get copyright claims or muted videos. A standard church copyright licence for projecting lyrics in the building does not, on its own, cover broadcasting performances online. In many countries churches add a streaming licence; CCLI, for example, describes its Streaming License and Streaming Plus License as extending its Church Copyright License to cover live-streamed and uploaded worship, including the music.

Check that every song in the set is covered by your licence before you go live.

Be careful with pre-recorded backing tracks, film clips and music videos. Rights for recordings are separate from rights for songs, so check what your licence actually covers.

Hymns that are in the public domain are generally free to sing, but a modern arrangement can still be protected.

Keep your song reports up to date. Many presentation programs can report streamed songs automatically.

If you are unsure about a song, cut to the holding slide for that part of the service. It is better than losing the whole video.

Step 5: Protect people's privacy

A camera pointed at the platform is very different from one that sweeps the congregation. Simple rules keep trust high:

Frame shots on the front, not on rows of people. Avoid close-ups of children unless parents have agreed.

Put a sign at the entrance saying the service is streamed and which seats are outside the camera's view.

Do not stream prayer ministry, counselling moments or personal prayer requests read aloud with names.

Agree who can take a stream offline or edit the recording if something sensitive is said.

Step 6: A simple Sunday checklist

60 minutes before: power on the laptop, camera and audio interface; open OBS; check the camera framing and focus.

45 minutes before: sound check the stream mix through headphones while the band rehearses.

30 minutes before: load the song lyrics and sermon slides; confirm the scheduled stream in YouTube Studio is ready.

10 minutes before: start streaming to a "starting soon" slide with quiet music you have the rights to use.

During the service: one person switches scenes; another watches the actual stream on a phone with headphones to catch delay, sound or picture problems.

After: end the stream, trim the dead air at the start, add chapter timestamps for worship and sermon, and share the link.

Before you announce the stream, run at least one full unlisted test on a real Sunday, and train two volunteers so it never depends on one person being there.

Step 7: Make the stream feel like church, not television

The technical setup is the easy part. What keeps online viewers connected is being welcomed. Greet the people watching online directly, for example "everyone joining us online this morning". Give them something to do: open their Bible, pray with the person next to them, or send a prayer request through the chat. Point them toward a next step, such as a small group (our guide on how to lead a small group Bible study can help groups that meet online) or a visit in person.

A good recording also has a long life. Post the sermon as its own video during the week; people searching for teaching on a passage often find a church through a single message. Our round-up of online sermons worth watching and our list of Christian YouTube channels show how other ministries present their teaching online.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to live stream a church service?

Use a phone or existing camera, a USB audio interface with a feed from the sound desk, a laptop running the free OBS Studio software and a free YouTube or Facebook account. The main costs are a tripod, cables and a streaming licence for the songs.

Do we need a licence to stream worship songs?

Usually, yes, for copyrighted songs. A licence for projecting lyrics in the building is not the same as permission to broadcast them. Check your licensing body's streaming option before your first stream.

Hebrews 10:24–25 asks believers to keep meeting together and to encourage one another. A live stream will never replace the room, but done carefully it lets the sick, the travelling and the curious share in that encouragement until they can be there in person.

How to Live Stream a Church Service: A Small-Church Setup Guide

There was a season — and maybe you're in it right now — when I couldn't physically get to church. It wasn't a choice; it was circumstance. An injury that kept me homebound for three months. During those weeks, church live streams became my lifeline. Not a substitute for community — nothing replaces being physically present with other believers — but a genuine connection point when presence wasn't possible.

The pandemic accelerated what was already happening: churches worldwide are now streaming their services in high quality, often with interactive chat, prayer teams, and midweek content. Whether you're traveling, recovering, exploring churches, or simply supplementing your Sunday experience, here are the best church live streams available right now.

Large Church Live Streams

Elevation Church — Charlotte, NC

Pastor Steven Furtick leads one of the most-watched church services in the world. Elevation's production quality is exceptional — the worship is powerful, the camera work is cinematic, and Furtick's preaching is dynamic and biblically grounded. They stream multiple services throughout the weekend, making it easy to find a time that works regardless of your timezone. The live chat is active and moderated, and their social media team engages with viewers in real time. Stream on YouTube or the Elevation Church app.

Transformation Church — Tulsa, OK

Michael Todd's Transformation Church has exploded in popularity, and their live streams are a big reason why. The energy is infectious — the worship team is world-class, the preaching is creative and deeply scriptural, and the atmosphere feels alive even through a screen. Their "Crazy Faith" and "Relationship Goals" series drew millions of live viewers. What sets Transformation Church apart is their intentional engagement with online viewers — they don't treat the live stream as an afterthought. Stream on YouTube.

Hillsong Church — Global

With campuses in Sydney, London, New York, and beyond, Hillsong offers live streams from around the world. The worship, as you'd expect, is phenomenal. But what surprises many first-time viewers is the depth of the preaching — Hillsong is often reduced to "just a worship brand," but their pastors deliver substantive, Bible-centered messages. Stream through the Hillsong Channel app or YouTube.

Passion City Church — Atlanta, GA

Louie Giglio's Passion City Church streams services that feel intimate despite the large venue. The worship (often led by Kristian Stanfill or Melodie Malone) is beautifully executed, and Giglio's preaching consistently inspires wonder and awe. Their streams also feature creative elements — short films, spoken word pieces, and visual art — that make the experience feel curated rather than simply broadcast. Stream on YouTube.

Mid-Size and Unique Churches

Church of the City — Franklin, TN

Led by Darren Whitehead, Church of the City offers a slightly more contemplative streaming experience. The worship is excellent (they're in Nashville, after all), and Whitehead's preaching is thoughtful, pastoral, and refreshingly unpretentious. If the megachurch production style feels overwhelming, this is a beautiful alternative. Stream on YouTube.

The Meeting House — Ontario, Canada

An Anabaptist church with a contemporary style, The Meeting House offers a perspective that's distinct from American evangelicalism. Their teaching series tackle difficult topics with nuance, and their commitment to nonviolence and radical inclusivity makes for thought-provoking sermons. If you're looking for a live stream that challenges your assumptions (in a good way), try this one. Stream on their website and YouTube.

Redeemer Presbyterian Church — New York, NY

Founded by the late Tim Keller, Redeemer continues his legacy of intellectually rigorous, gospel-centered preaching in one of the most secular cities in the world. Their services are less flashy than some megachurch streams, but the substance of the teaching is extraordinary. If you appreciate theology that engages with culture, philosophy, and the arts, Redeemer's live stream is a treasure. Stream on their website.

International Streams

Hillsong London

For a slightly different flavor than the Sydney original, Hillsong London brings a multicultural energy that reflects one of the most diverse cities on earth. The worship sets often include songs you won't hear in American churches, and the preaching addresses the unique challenges of living as a Christian in a post-Christian European context.

COZA (Commonwealth of Zion Assembly) — Abuja, Nigeria

If you've never experienced African worship, a COZA live stream will change your life. The energy, the music, the sheer joy of their worship is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. Nigerian churches bring an exuberance to Sunday mornings that can reignite the worship in your own heart.

Planetshakers — Melbourne, Australia

Planetshakers is known for high-energy worship and dynamic preaching. Their live streams from Melbourne carry an intensity that translates surprisingly well through screens. If you need your Sunday morning to wake you up — spiritually and physically — this is your stream.

Making the Most of Online Church

Dress the part (sort of). You don't need a suit, but getting out of pajamas signals to your brain that this is intentional, not casual. Treat it like you're going somewhere — because spiritually, you are.

Eliminate distractions. Close other tabs. Put your phone face-down. Tell your family you're "at church." The value of a live stream is directly proportional to the attention you give it.

Participate actively. Sing along. Take notes. Engage in the chat. Raise your hands if the Spirit leads. You're not watching a show — you're joining a service.

Find community. The biggest limitation of online church is isolation. Combat it by joining the church's online small groups, Discord servers, or post-service discussion rooms. Many churches have built genuine online communities around their live streams.

Give financially. If a church's live stream is blessing you, support them. They're investing significant resources to make their services available to you. A gift — even a small one — is both practical support and an act of worship.

Don't let it replace local church. If you're able to attend a local church in person, do it. Live streams are a supplement, not a substitute. There are aspects of Christian community — physical presence, communion, the laying on of hands, bearing one another's burdens — that cannot happen through a screen.

A Sunday Morning Anywhere

There's something remarkable about the fact that on any given Sunday, you can worship with believers in Tulsa, Sydney, London, Lagos, and Atlanta — all from your living room. The global church is more connected than it has ever been. And while that connection is no replacement for the person sitting next to you in the pew, it's a gift from God for seasons when the pew is out of reach.

So this Sunday, if you can't be there — wherever "there" is — be here. Pull up a stream. Sing the songs. Hear the Word. And know that you're not watching alone. You're part of something vast and beautiful: the body of Christ, gathered across time zones and continents, united by one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

Hebrews 10:25 — "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another." However you meet — in person, online, or somewhere in between — keep meeting. Keep gathering. Keep worshipping. The church is alive, and it's streaming now.

Best Church Live Streams to Join Online

I went through a phase where I consumed motivational content the way some people consume coffee — constantly and desperately. I'd watch speakers who told me I could do anything, be anything, achieve anything if I just believed in myself hard enough. It worked for about twenty minutes. Then reality would set in, and I'd feel worse than before — because "believe in yourself" is thin soup when you're facing real adversity.

Christian motivational speakers offer something different. Not motivation built on willpower, but encouragement rooted in God's power. Not "you can do it" but "God can do it through you." That distinction matters, because it means the fuel never runs out. Here are the voices we turn to when we need both fire and foundation.

Speakers Who Combine Truth with Passion

Priscilla Shirer

Priscilla Shirer doesn't just motivate — she mobilizes. Her speaking style is intense, biblical, and deeply personal. When she talks about prayer, spiritual warfare, or God's calling on your life, you feel like she's looking directly at you. Her War Room keynote addresses and her Going Beyond conference talks are electrifying. But what sets her apart from secular motivational speakers is her constant anchor in Scripture. She doesn't give you a pep talk — she gives you marching orders from the Word of God. Her video content on YouTube is extensive, and every minute is worth your time.

Steven Furtick

Love him or critique him, Steven Furtick knows how to communicate. His energy is high, his illustrations are creative, and his ability to reframe biblical narratives in modern terms is remarkable. Messages like "When the Battle Chooses You" and "The Art of Overthinking" address real struggles with pastoral sensitivity and motivational force. He's especially effective for younger audiences who have tuned out traditional preaching styles. Elevation Church's YouTube channel posts his full sermons weekly.

Christine Caine

Christine Caine brings a rare combination of passion and purpose. As the founder of the A21 Campaign (fighting human trafficking) and Propel Women, she speaks from a life of active service, not theoretical comfort. Her talks on overcoming obstacles, stepping into your calling, and trusting God in the unknown are powered by her own remarkable story of discovering her adoption and finding identity in Christ. Her Passion Conference talks are particularly memorable. Search for "Christine Caine Passion" on YouTube.

Tony Evans

Dr. Tony Evans has been preaching for decades, and his ability to make Scripture practical is unmatched. He doesn't just teach the Bible — he applies it to Monday morning. His topics range from leadership and purpose to spiritual warfare and racial reconciliation. What makes him motivational in the truest sense is his unwavering insistence that God's Word is sufficient for every challenge. His sermon clips on YouTube, often 10-15 minutes, are perfect for a midday encouragement boost.

Voices for Specific Seasons

Lisa TerKeurst — For Seasons of Disappointment

The president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lisa TerKeurst speaks and writes with a vulnerability that makes her relatable to anyone walking through heartbreak. Her messages on disappointment, rejection, and finding God in the middle of "not what I planned" have helped millions. After publicly sharing her own journey through betrayal and divorce, her voice carries an authority that comes only from lived experience. Her video teachings are available on the Proverbs 31 YouTube channel.

Louie Giglio — For Worshippers Who Need Wonder

Louie Giglio, founder of Passion Conferences, has a gift for revealing the majesty of God through science, creation, and story. His messages about stars, DNA, and the human body are designed to make you stand in awe of the Creator. If your faith has become routine and you've lost your sense of wonder, Louie's talks are medicine. The "Indescribable" and "How Great Is Our God" sermons are classics that have been viewed millions of times.

Levi Lusko — For Young Adults Navigating Life

Pastor Levi Lusko speaks with raw honesty about grief (having lost his daughter), identity, and purpose. His style is contemporary, funny, and deeply empathetic. He connects with young adults who are navigating the chaos of early adulthood — career uncertainty, relationship questions, mental health struggles — with biblical truth that doesn't feel preachy. His "Through the Eyes of a Lion" talks are especially powerful.

John Gray — For Raw Emotional Honesty

John Gray's preaching style is emotionally expressive in a way that gives people permission to feel. He weeps on stage. He laughs. He shouts. And through it all, he teaches the Bible with a pastor's heart. His messages on identity, manhood, marriage, and healing have resonated with millions. His viral sermon clips have some of the highest engagement numbers in Christian YouTube.

International Voices

Dag Heward-Mills

The Ghanaian pastor and author has a global ministry that reaches across Africa and beyond. His teachings on leadership, church planting, and loyalty are direct, practical, and deeply biblical. His books and video sermons are available in multiple languages, and his influence on African Christianity is immense.

Judah Smith

Based in Los Angeles, Judah Smith is the lead pastor of Churchome and known for his conversational, witty, and grace-saturated preaching. His approach to motivation is refreshingly free of religious performance — he constantly points people back to Jesus' love rather than their own effort. His "Jesus Is" series is a wonderful starting point.

How to Consume Motivational Content Wisely

Test everything against Scripture. A compelling speaker isn't automatically a truthful one. 1 John 4:1 says to "test the spirits." If a message makes you feel good but contradicts the Bible, the feelings don't override the Word.

Don't become a consumer. Motivation without action is entertainment. After watching a talk, ask: "What will I do differently today because of this?" Then do it.

Follow people, not platforms. Algorithms will feed you whatever gets clicks. Instead, subscribe directly to the speakers you trust and ignore the clickbait suggestions.

Balance inspiration with formation. Motivational talks are the appetizer. Bible study, prayer, community, and service are the meal. Don't fill up on appetizers.

Pray for the speakers you follow. They carry weight that you don't see. The enemy targets those with influence. Cover them in prayer.

Real motivation — the kind that lasts past the emotional high — isn't found in a speaker's charisma. It's found in the God they point to. The best Christian motivational speakers know this. They don't ask you to follow them. They ask you to follow Jesus. And when you do, you'll find a motivation deeper than any conference talk can provide: the unshakable knowledge that the God of the universe is for you, with you, and working through you.

Romans 8:31 — "If God is for us, who can be against us?" That's not motivation. That's reality.
